As part of Earth Day 2024, Ollie was invited to enter two art competitions ran by Westminster University in collaboration with Angel Central and Kings Cross. Both pieces, although in separate installations, are part of a two-piece series named âOil Sold Separatelyâ. These pieces explore the excessive use and reliance of plastic which plagues our planet.
The first piece, âMy First Plasticsâ was exhibited along Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross. It responds to the theme of Babies vs. Plastics, as put forward by Kings Cross. From their first breath, babies are born into a world where plastics reign supreme. Every bottle, every toy, and every meal – entwined with synthetic polymers that linger for generations. As they grow, so does the omnipresence of plastic, infiltrating even the air they breathe and the water they drink, in the form of microplastics. The cycle perpetuates an unbreakable bond between humanity and its plastic creations.
In this relentless dance with modernity, the spectre of eternity looms large. Plastics, with their stubborn resilience, defy decay, covering every corner of the Earth for decades, if not centuries. For babies born into this plasticised reality, there is no escape from its grasp. Theirs is a lifetime entangled in the synthetic embrace, a poignant reminder of humanity’s impact on the world.
The second piece, âPlanet Plasticâ was exhibited in Angel Central in a public facing arts project in Islington. This piece responds to the theme set by Angel Central, Plastics vs. Planet. “The doomsday clock ticks perilously closeâ90 seconds remain. Our addiction to plastics ravages land, sea, and sky, pushing our Earth to the brink. This is our final warning; there are no second chances, no planet B. We stand at the precipice of irreversible ruin. It’s time to act, to forge a new path, to preserve our fragile sanctuary. The clock is ticking, and change is the only option.”
We would like to congratulate and applaud Ollie on his fantastic achievement and artwork, bringing light to the ever imposing challenges created as a result of our own actions. Check out this eye opening exhibition in both Coal Drops Yard and Angel Street.
